In a week that has been nothing short of turbulent and absolutely immersive for the news cycle for the 2022 Texas football recruiting class, it seems like the headlines just keep pouring in. It can be a bit hectic to follow all that is happening at the moment on the Forty Acres, especially on the recruiting trail.

But new head coach Steve Sarkisian and the Longhorns are doing their best to put together a good string of events for the 2022 class right now. Texas landed a big-time commitment for their 2022 class on the evening of June 28 in the form of four-star Tyler Legacy (TX) running back Jamarion Miller.

And then more news came down ranging from the social media “commitment” announcement of five-star linebacker Harold Perkins to four-star safety Bryce Anderson pushing back his decision timeline.

Another noteworthy point to make for the Longhorns 2022 class at the outset of this dead period for the offseason concerned the four-star Lewisville wide receiver commit Armani Winfield. According to a report from Horns247 (paid content) this week, Winfield could consider his options and re-open his recruitment depending on how any more visits go heading into the fall.

Winfield reportedly visited with head coach Ed Orgeron and the LSU Tigers on June 25. And he had an official visit with the Michigan State Spartans earlier this month. Multiple visits aren’t completely surprising for a prospect like Winfield that hadn’t got to do this type of tour previously during his recruitment.

What lies ahead for 4-Star Texas football commit Armani Winfield?

But hopefully, Winfield will keep his commitment to Texas firm heading into the fall. We’ll just have to wait and see how his visit schedule plays out for the rest of the summer months. Getting him back to campus combined with a good amount of success on the field early in the fall could mean good things for Texas in terms of retaining the commitment of Winfield.

It does appear that LSU and Michigan State could be two schools to watch in competition to try and flip the commitment of Winfield. It appears that LSU made a really good impression on Winfield given the way that the words are coming out of Baton Rouge and Austin with the dead period kicking back in this week.

Texas should still be pretty confident about the position they sit in with Winfield. In the situation that he does re-open his recruitment, it seems like Texas would still have a good chance to getting Winfield back in the mix when it’s all said and done.

The latter stages of the COVID-19 pandemic are sure to provide for plenty of volatility for all Power Five programs on the recruiting trail. That was just the nature of how all of these changes and adaptations were going to go through such a weird time.
