While there’s no true point guard that the Longhorns have this season to replace the departed senior standout Matt Coleman, an option who can take his role at the one is the former Kentucky Wildcats freshman guard Devin Askew. As one of the initial big commitments out of the transfer portal for Beard and the Longhorns this offseason, Askew could challenge for a spot in the starting unit this season.

Since he was a five-star recruit coming out of Mater Dei High School in Santa Ana, CA, Askew showed NBA-caliber potential. Both Texas and Texas Tech were after Askew coming out of high school, but he wound up taking his talents to join up with head coach John Calipari at Kentucky.

Askew didn’t have the type of production that was going to make him a first or early second-round draft pick as a one-and-done, but the long-term promise is there for Askew. It bodes well for him that Askew’s defensive ability and length make him such a gifted player on the perimeter. At 6-foot-3 and 200 pounds, Askew has long-term potential for an NBA career.

Improving his deep shooting, facilitation of the offense in the halfcourt, and often untimely turnovers, are the areas where Askew can prove himself to NBA scouts. Texas presents a new opportunity for Askew for him to lift his game after going through a truly tough freshman campaign in Lexington.
