A massive day that the 2022 Texas football recruiting class was waiting for this week arrived on the night of July 2. Texas got two commitments added to their 2022 class, which gets the offensive line off and running for new head coach Steve Sarkisian and offensive line coach/offensive coordinator Kyle Flood.

The two commitments actually arrived simultaneously (or at least the announcements did). The Longhorns added both three-star Westlake interior offensive lineman Connor Robertson and four-star Frisco interior offensive lineman Cole Hutson at 7 p.m. CT on July 2.

This is quite the note for the Longhorns 2022 class to enter the weekend on. Texas needed to get off and running for their offensive line entering the weekend. And maybe this is something that will help move the needle for Texas in their pursuit of the commitment of the five-star Summer Creek offensive tackle Kelvin Banks.

Both Robertson and Hutson seemingly curated their decisions on social media entering the weekend. This brings the number of commits for Sark in the Longhorns 2022 class up to 14 now. And the action might not be done this weekend for the Longhorns 2022 class.

3-Star IOL Connor Robertson and 4-Star IOL Cole Hutson join Texas football simultaneously

The writing was definitely on the wall that Texas was in a very good position to land the commitment of Robertson on July 2, but there was less clarity surrounding Hutson. Still, this is big for Texas to start solidifying the interior of the offensive with this duo of commitments.

Texas had a big week as a whole for their 2022 class. To start the week, Texas picked up a commitment from the four-star Tyler Legacy (TX) running back Jamarion Miller.

What Texas is getting out of Robertson is a 6-foot-4 and 295-pound offensive lineman that will most likely be a switchable guard. He’s got solid footwork and fundamentals first in blocking for the run game. He gets a good push off the line and can match speeds with the rusher to get multiple levels deep in the opposing defense.

The pass blocking ability of Robertson still has some work to do, but he’s got potential in that area. He could definitely be a starter for the Longhorns by his second or third year if he progresses in pass blocking early in his college career.

Robertson ranks as the nation’s No. 545 2022 high school prospect, No. 20 interior offensive lineman, and No. 77 prospect out of Texas (247Sports Composite). And the Top247 ranks him as the No. 21 interior offensive lineman and No. 71 prospect out of Texas.

Hutson is the higher-rated of the two offensive line commits for the Longhorns on July 2. He ranks as the nation’s No. 331 2022 high school prospect, No. 13 interior offensive lineman, and No. 49 prospect out of Texas (247Sports Composite). And the Top247 ranks him as the No. 13 interior offensive lineman and No. 58 prospect out of Texas.

What Texas is getting out of Hutson in particular if more of a versatile offensive lineman that could start earlier in his career than Robertson. The 6-foot-5 and 315-pound lineman is likely to fit in as an offensive guard but could switch to tackle. He’s got the frame to play at either spot in the trenches.

Hutson is able to finish through plays with a high motor that Longhorns fans will really appreciate. He’s got more experience blocking for the ground game than in the passing game but generally excels in both. What is nice about Hutson’s frame and skill set is that it should be pretty moldable at the next level to this new Sark offensive scheme.

Good hands and overall fundamentals makes Hutson a valuable initial pickup for the 2022 class along the offensive line.

Some of the schools that Texas had to beat out to land the commitment of Robertson included the Stanford Cardinal, Tennessee Volunteers, TCU Horned Frogs, and USC Trojans. It did appear that Texas and Stanford were the two top schools in the running for Robertson’s commitment when it came down to it.

Meanwhile, there were more schools seemingly in the mix for Hutson. Some of those finalists for Hutson included the Oklahoma Sooners, Texas A&M Aggies, and Alabama Crimson Tide. But Oklahoma and Texas A&M looked like big challengers the entire way that Texas was able to beat out in the end to land Hutson.
