Texas Football: Quinn Ewers on pressure to flip to Longhorns
The event on the recruiting trail that seemingly sent the Texas football program into a downward spiral in terms of chaos was losing the commitment of the elite five-star Southlake Carroll pro-style quarterback Quinn Ewers last fall. Once the foundation of what looked to be an elite 2022 recruiting class for former head coach Tom Herman, Ewers was poised to take this program to new heights.
But the commitment of Ewers only stuck around with Herman and the Longhorns 2022 class for a couple of months before they lost it. Ewers had originally committed to Texas back on Aug. 14, 2020. That only saw him re-open his recruitment less than three months later, decommitting officially from Texas on Oct. 28, 2020.
Then, Ewers essentially flipped his commitment to join head coach Ryan Day and the Ohio State Buckeyes on Nov. 19.
The lone remaining piece of the Longhorns 2022 class that was committed at the time of Ewers leaving the mix is the four-star Memorial cornerback Jaylon Guilbeau. Texas also lost a commitment at the time from four-star Lancaster wide receiver Phaizon Wilson.
The 2022 Texas football recruiting class now an afterthought for 5-Star QB Quinn Ewers
Moreover, we are now currently in the midst of the Elite 11 Camp in Los Angeles this week. And Ewers is one of the marquee names to watch in LA among some of the top 2022 quarterbacks in the entire country, including four-star Texas quarterback commit Maalik Murphy.
During the week of the Elite 11 camp in LA, Ewers spoke on the matter of what he thinks is building up with the Buckeyes and no pressure he’s getting to give his commitment back to the Longhorns. Here’s more on what he had to say on the matter in a piece with 247Sports on July 1.
"As for Texas, Ewers says he still sees some people that tell him to reconsider his commitment and stay close to home. However, he’s locked in on the Buckeyes.“Yeah, definitely, some people in and around town,” Ewers said. “You know, but I’m pretty locked in with my decision right now.”"
There looked to be a chance that Texas could open back up communication with Ewers following the departure of Herman and the subsequent hire of new head coach Steve Sarkisian on Jan. 2. But that is not of the utmost importance at the moment since the Longhorns do have a commitment from a highly-touted pro-style quarterback in the Junipero Serra product Murphy.
Ewers looks destined to sign with Ohio State. Texas fans should laud Sark for responding well on the recruiting trail right after his hiring to get a commitment from a foundational and potent quarterback like the California native Murphy.
Texas now holds commitments from a dozen prospects in their 2022 class, with the most recent coming from four-star Tyler Legacy (TX) running back Jamarion Miller. According to the 247Sports Team Composite Rankings, the 2022 Texas recruiting class ranks at No.
