What is likely considered to be one of the three or four most important targets remaining from this point on for the 2022 Texas football recruiting class is the elite five-star Bowie offensive guard Devon Campbell. Texas had its first really big miss on the recruiting trail for the 2022 class last week by seeing the five-star Summer Creek offensive tackle Kelvin Banks commit to the Oregon Ducks over this program and the rival Texas A&M Aggies.

Campbell could very well be the first five-star offensive line commit in the Longhorns 2022 class. He would also be the first five-star commit to play along the offensive line since the 2013 recruiting class, with five-star Harker Heights offensive guard Darius James. Granted, James never did much for the Longhorns in his time on the Forty Acres.

Moreover, Texas looks to be in a good position at the moment with Campbell. Texas made it through his latest round of finalist cuts, where he announced his top five schools. The other four finalists that made it through the latest round of cuts for Campbell were the Oklahoma Sooners, LSU Tigers, USC Trojans, and Alabama Crimson Tide.

Still positive news for the 2022 Texas football recruiting class with 5-Star OG Devon Campbell

At the moment, it looks like the two frontrunners (if there are two at the top of the list) for Campbell are Texas and Oklahoma. Oklahoma got the final official visit from Campbell during the resumption of in-person campus visits last month. And Texas did get a recent unofficial visit from Campbell prior to the dead period this month.

What are the indicators for how Texas stacks up compared to the rest of the competition in the race to land a commitment from Campbell right now?

According to a report from 247Sports (paid content), Texas still should hold an edge over Oklahoma and the rest of the finalist schools in the race to land Campbell. Oklahoma has reportedly gained ground in the race for Campbell of late, but Texas sounds like it still sits at the top.

Campbell clearly looks to be the top priority among the offensive line targets for the Longhorns 2022 class. Sealing the deal with him should be of the utmost priority for new head coach Steve Sarkisian and offensive line coach/offensive coordinator Kyle Flood.

Texas currently holds commitments from two prospects along the offensive line in the 2022 class. Both arrived subsequently back on July 2 in the form of four-star Frisco interior offensive lineman Cole Hutson and three-star Westlake interior offensive lineman Connor Robertson.
