Texas Basketball: Full projected rotation with return of Courtney Ramey
Center: Tre Mitchell
It’s somewhat hard to believe that Beard did so much good work in the transfer portal so far this offseason to round out the forward/frontcourt rotations the way that he did. The most recent transfer portal addition for Beard and the Longhorns this offseason came last month in the form of the former UMass Minutemen star sophomore center, Tre Mitchell.
The two-time Atlantic-10 All-Conference Team selection and the 2010-20 A-10 Newcomer of the Year Mitchell was a huge get for Texas out of the portal. He is similar to Disu in the sense that he can score with his back-to-the-basket, but he can also effectively space the floor. But Mitchell is a more capable rim protector that hits the offensive glass very hard.
In a way, Mitchell could turn into some type of a less lengthy hybrid of the former breakthrough Texas sophomore power forward Kai Jones and senior center Jericho Sims. Last season, Mitchell averaged 18.8 points per game, 7.2 rebounds, 2.2 assists, 1.2 steals, and 1.5 blocks. And he shot 51.9 percent from the field, 37.5 percent from beyond the arc, and 76.8 percent from the free-throw line.
There will be a lot of switchability between a starting frontcourt unit of Disu and Mitchell if that’s how it plays out at the outset of next season. Mitchell is slightly more of a traditional big man with a bigger frame, while Disu is a rapidly improving stretch-four that runs the floor very effectively. These two could be special for Texas next season.
