Oklahoma State

There is another option out of the Big 12 that could be a nice addition to the package deal with Oklahoma and Texas to the SEC. Oklahoma forms a decent rivalry with the Oklahoma State Cowboys in Bedlam. That is a competitive rivalry in multiple sports, unfortunately just not football, despite Oklahoma State’s rise to relevance since Mike Gundy became head coach.

But Oklahoma State does have a good athletic program that ranks fourth in the entire country in NCAA recognized team titles. That is good for most in the Big 12. If you consider all national titles between recognized football titles retroactively, and other team titles (including any that were not sanctioned previously by the NCAA but are now in the modern day), then Texas does lead the Big 12.

Moreover, Oklahoma State could also be a school that provides a geographically relevant foe for a number of teams in the SEC West, and Mizzou. Oklahoma State also remains competitive in multiple other sports, including baseball, women’s basketball, often men’s basketball, and softball, among others.

The package deal fit with Oklahoma would be the main appeal of also bringing in Oklahoma State. But the geographic proximity and recruiting connection with other states like Texas, Louisiana, and Arkansas, makes the Pokes an even more appealing option here. There are a few layers that make sense for why the SEC should add Oklahoma State to the mix.
