Texas Football: SEC moves ups the odds of landing 5-Star Evan Stewart
As one of the top targets remaining uncommitted for the 2022 Texas football recruiting class from here on out, the elite five-star Frisco-Liberty wide receiver Evan Stewart will have a lot of eyeballs on him whenever his decision drops. But it looks like it will be the fall until Stewart actually announces his decision, which will also likely be the final destination for him to sign.
Texas originally held the commitment of the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex native Stewart. He committed to the Longhorns back on Feb. 18, 2021, only to decommit less than one month later. Since that time, new head coach Steve Sarkisian and the Longhorns did a nice job to try and stay at the forefront of the recruitment of Stewart.
There’s still a good chance that the Longhorns are the place where Stewart takes his talents when it’s all said and done. Both the 247Sports Crystal Ball Predictions and Rivals FutureCast project the commitment of Stewart to land with Texas over the rest of the field.
Something that could help move the needle, though, in the recruitment of Stewart in this move for the Longhorns from the Big 12 to the SEC. Texas announced on the morning of July 26 that it intends to leave the Big 12 for the SEC with the passing of the renewal of the media grant of rights once 2025 arrives.
Impact of the SEC move for Texas football with 5-Star WR Evan Stewart
It is clear that the timing of when Texas and the rival Oklahoma Sooners actually make the move from playing in games in conference in the SEC will matter a lot to top recruits like Stewart. If Texas can make that move from the Big 12 to the SEC by 2023, then it could really help in landing a commitment from Stewart. But it’s hard to know if that timeline will surface in the next few months.
But making the move from the Big 12 to the SEC should do nothing but help the Longhorns’ cause in the recruitment of Stewart. Most of the other top schools pursuing Stewart at the moment are out of the SEC. Some of those top programs pursuing Stewart out of the SEC are the Florida Gators, Texas A&M Aggies, and Alabama Crimson Tide.
Stewart took an official visit with Texas last month. That was one of the just two official visits that Stewart took in June. He still has a few remaining, and he could very well return to the Forty Acres within the next few weeks to visit. The other school that he used an official visit on last month was with Florida.
If Texas were to land a commitment from Stewart, he would be the lone five-star prospect in the 2022 class. Texas has new special teams coordinator/tight ends coach Jeff Banks and second-year wide receivers coach Andre Coleman as the top recruiters after Stewart.
