Texas Tech

The main task at hand this fall for the former Utah State Aggies head coach Matt Wells will be to lead the Texas Tech Red Raiders to a record that features more than four wins. Texas Tech raked in four wins (along with records well below .500) in each of the first two seasons with Wells at the helm as the head coach. He replaced current Arizona Cardinals head coach Kliff Kingsbury prior to the 2019 season.

Wells and the Red Raiders nearly pulled off a big upset of former star quarterback Sam Ehlinger and the Longhorns last fall, in the Big 12 opener in Lubbock. But a massive rally from Ehlinger and the Longhorns pulled off the improbable comeback win.

Texas Tech will be motivated for multiple reasons to beat Texas this fall. Wells has yet to get a victory over Texaas in two tries. And while he came close last fall, beating the Longhorns in Austin was a problem for the Red Raiders two years ago. Given the way these two teams project this fall, it could be a similar story when Texas and Texas Tech meet in Austin on Sep. 25.

Texas Tech will once again be the Big 12 opener for the Longhorns. That is reason enough for Texas Tech to want to get the early upset of Sark and the Longhorns during the regular season. Among other reasons, the Red Raiders have to be frustrated about how this situation went down with Texas and Oklahoma leaving for the SEC.

Maybe the biggest reason why the Red Raiders will have a major chip on their shoulder in facing Texas this fall is the fact that Wells is on one of the hotter seats in the entire country. We’ll see how Wells performs with his back up against this wall in Big 12 play.
