The journey for the former four-star Texas linebacker commit and the redshirt sophomore David Gbenda thus far on the Forty Acres was a very winding road. Texas has switched Gbenda between multiple different position groups. He was even at running back for a bit of time in 2019 with the Longhorns, in the midst of a host of injury issues in fall camp.

Gbenda now looks to be settled at the linebacker position. Unfortunately for him, Texas brought in a host of new additions to the program at the linebacker position out of the transfer portal this offseason. Some of the new additions for Texas at linebacker include former New Mexico State Aggies sophomore Devin Richardson, LSU Tigers senior Ray Thornton, and Alabama senior Ben Davis, among others.

That is bad timing for Gbenda, who looked to have a newfound opportunity to step up in a bigger role entering the fall. Instead, Gbenda will now have to work his way much further up the linebacker depth chart than he had to last offseason. And Gbenda is getting to a point in his college career where he might want to consider other options if he’s still a third-stringer by the end of the 2021 campaign.

Thus far in his two years playing for Texas, Gbenda registered just 20 combined tackles, no tackles for loss, no sacks, one interception, and no pass breakups. The lone career interception for Gbenda came last fall in that dominant regular season finale win for Herman and the Longhorns over the Kansas State Wildcats.
