Garrett Gilbert

There are now two former Longhorns transfer quarterbacks that are looking to stick around in key roles on NFL rosters this year. The first (and what should be noted as an honorable mention on this list) is the former four-star recruit and Kansas City Chiefs undrafted free agent signing Shane Buechele.

Buechele even tossed the game-winning touchdown for the Chiefs against former Longhorn and head coach Kyle Shanahan and the San Francisco 49ers. That was his first career preseason game, and he did about as good as possible in a tough spotlight in clutch time.

Moreover, Buechele is one of the aforementioned two former Longhorn transfer quarterbacks on this list. Both he and the former five-star recruit Garrett Gilbert transferred from Texas to join the SMU Mustangs in their college careers. Gilbert is now looking to seal the deal for himself in a backup role with the Dallas Cowboys.

The Cowboys brought back Gilbert this season in case anything happens with the health of the former Mississippi State Bulldogs star quarterback Dak Prescott.

Gilbert did get his first career start in the NFL with the Cowboys last season. And he performed pretty well all things considered in an eventual close loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers. In his career to date, Gilbert registered 283 passing yards, one passing touchdown, one interception, and 25 rushing yards, with no rushing scores.

There’s a chance that Gilbert could get more snaps with the Cowboys this season. The Cowboys are already taking it slow with Prescott in Training Camp and the preseason as he’s dealing with some soreness in his throwing shoulder.
