Texas Football: 3 players that were drastically underutilized by Herman
Tarik Black, WR
The former blue-chip recruit and Michigan Wolverines wide receiver Tarik Black was one of the later additions out of the NCAA Transfer Portal for Herman and the Longhorns. The former graduate transfer didn’t get that many key game reps with the Longhorns last fall, though, as no clear primary receiver emerged all season long.
As Texas was grappling with the losses of the likes of former senior star wideouts Collin Johnson and Devin Duvernay last year, Black looked like he could replace some of their production. Instead, Texas only got the ball to Black for 10 receptions last season. Although, he did do a lot of good things with those 10 catches.
Black took those 10 catches for 240 receiving yards (24 yards per catch) and one touchdown last season. More than half of those receiving yards, though, came thanks to one catch for 72 yards in the win over the Baylor Bears and in the season opener against the UTEP Miners.
One of the main problems that Black faced last fall had to do with fumbles. He did fumble the ball twice last season, once against the Iowa State Cyclones and once against UTEP. Black is starting to prove with the Indianapolis Colts, though, that he should’ve been used more often by both Texas and Michigan.
Black really couldn’t seem to find himself in the right situation with any passing game between his time with Texas and Michigan. He finished up his career with 50 catches for 747 receiving yards (14.9 yards per catch) and three touchdown catches. Texas didn’t give him the best shot, despite some solid production on the 10 catches he did manage.
