There’s a ton of buzz surrounding the defensive line in the 2022 Texas football recruiting class at the moment. Roughly one week from the start of the regular season, Texas still has a large emphasis placed on the recruiting trail in late August.

Among the prospects of the Longhorns 2022 class coming to the forefront of late, five-star Duncanville edge rusher Omari Abor is one of those to watch. The Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex product and 6-foot-4 and 240-pound standout released his top five finalist schools Aug. 27.

The top five finalist schools was published on Twitter heading into the weekend. And Texas still sits among his top schools in the latest round of finalist cuts.

The other four finalist schools for Abor are the LSU Tigers, Ohio State Buckeyes, Texas A&M Aggies, and Alabama Crimson Tide. It is a bit surprising that Abor didn’t have the Oklahoma Sooners among his top five finalist schools.

Texas football still alive for 5-Star edge rusher Omari Abor

Oklahoma was the presumed favorite heading into the summer for Abor. But this looks like good news for the Longhorns. Come out of the gates hot this fall, with some good efforts on the recruiting trail, and Texas can likely gain even more ground with Abor.

Texas was not one of the schools that got a visit from Abor in the last two months. The last school that Abor visited was Texas A&M at the end of July. Oklahoma, Alabama, LSU, and Ohio State, also got official visits with Abor back in June.

Getting Abor for a visit this fall would really help Texas continue to move in the right direction with him. New Texas special teams coordinator/tight ends coach Jeff Banks and co-defensive coordinator/linebackers coach Pete Kwiatkowski look to still be alive in this recruitment, but it will be an uphill battle the rest of the way.

All of the expert 247Sports Crystal Ball Predictions have Abor’s commitment landing with Oklahoma over the rest of the field. But all of those predictions are pretty outdated at this point.

Meanwhile, the Rivals FutureCast now projects the commitment of Abor to go to Alabama.

Texas is firmly headed in the right direction along the defensive line in the 2022 class. New defensive line coach Bo Davis and the Longhorns got a commitment from four-star Southaven (MS) defensive lineman Aaron Bryant on Aug. 26. And it looks like Texas is now trending to land the commitment of touted four-star Marlin (TX) defensive lineman Jaray Bledsoe.
