A good run of late on the trail for new head coach Steve Sarkisian and his 2022 Texas football recruiting class hit what looked to be a climax last week. In a span of roughly 72 hours, Texas landed commitments from three blue-chip defensive linemen. That was a pretty incredible run for just one position group in the 2022 class.

And one prospect that Longhorns fans are following very close heading into the fall for the 2022 class is a former commit and key blue-chip corner. Four-star Memorial (TX) cornerback Jaylon Guilbeau decommitted from Texas back on July 21, following a key official visit back on June 25.

Since Guilbeau decommitted from Texas more than one month ago, he has taken two unofficial visits. One of those unofficials came with the Texas A&M Aggies back on July 31, and the other was with Texas on July 30.

Texas, Texas A&M, and the TCU Horned Frogs are the three teams to watch in pursuit of Guilbeau’s commitment heading into the final stretch run of this recruiting cycle. Those were the top three schools he had following his decommitment from Texas.

Texas football starting to move back in the right direction with 4-Star CB Jaylon Guilbeau

The two former Texas commits that still firmly to be on the Longhorns’ radar this fall are Guilbeau and the elite five-star Frisco-Liberty wide receiver Evan Stewart. Landing those two back in the Longhorns 2022 class would be quite the exclamation point for Sark and his staff in this 2022 class by the time the Early Signing Period arrives.

Good news for Texas is that Guilbeau is set to make his way to Austin for a visit this weekend. Texas has a big game weekend coming up in a key battle with head coach Billy Napier and the No. 23 ranked Louisiana Ragin’ Cajuns.

Get a win over Louisiana this weekend and Texas will have some momentum on the recruiting trail with top interested prospects in the 2022 class like Guilbeau. At the moment, this looks to be a battle between the Longhorns and Horned Frogs primarily for the Port Arthur, TX, defensive back.

But a strong run with a persistent effort from the Texas A&M staff this fall could also win over Guilbeau’s interests to the Aggies.

Texas has new cornerbacks coach Terry Joseph as the primary recruiter pursuing Guilbeau. He is namely competing with Texas A&M defensive backs coach TJ Rushing and TCU cornerbacks coach Jeremy Modkins to get the commitment of Guilbeau back in the 2022 class.

Since the elite five-star North Shore cornerback Denver Harris appears to be getting away from the Longhorns of late, getting Guilbeau committed in the 2022 class is of the utmost importance. Harris has started to trend more to the Alabama Crimson Tide of late, and that is a hard train of momentum to slow down when Nick Saban gets rolling with a top-tier prospect like Harris.

For now, Longhorns fans can hang their hat on the fact that Texas is moving in a better direction with Guilbeau. And if Texas can capitalize on a chance to get a big season-opening win this weekend over Louisiana, that will go a long way to continuing to trend in the direction of getting Guilbeau’s commitment back in the 2022 class.
