Offensive line has a long way to go

What was definitely the weakest spot of the Longhorns offense in this big 20-point win over the Ragin’ Cajuns was the offensive line. Texas didn’t let sophomore quarterback Hudson Card get much time in the pocket out of the gates. The good news was that Card showed a lot of elusiveness and escapability to get out of the pocket.

Texas got pretty lucky that spotty offensive line play at times didn’t cost them more in terms of sacks or turnovers. In fact, Card only got sacked three times on the day. And redshirt junior quarterback Casey Thompson didn’t go down a single time for a sack, despite the inconsistencies in the trenches in this game.

There were also some costly penalties that were caused by mistakes from the offensive line. And it wasn’t just some of the newer starting offensive linemen that got beat at times and came up with costly penalties. The likes of seniors Christian Jones, Denzel Okafor, and Derek Kerstetter were all penalized at least once.

One other piece of bad news for new offensive line coach/offensive coordinator Kyle Flood came up with the injury to junior offensive guard Junior Angilau. The former four-star recruit and offensive line anchor Angilau came up slow in the second half with what looked to be a lower-body injury. We will continue to monitor his status throughout the rest of the weekend.
