Derion Gullette, LB

During the brief contact period last week, we got to really see how the picture of the recruitment of the underrated three-star Marlin (TX) linebacker/edge rusher Derion Gullette could play out in the end. He posted graphics that were sent to him for social media in bunches from a number of different schools last week, including one from Texas.

While Gullette is still firmly in the realm of a single-digit number of schools on his offer sheet as of the evening of Sep. 5, his momentum on the recruiting trail is starting to build.

Some of the other schools that he posted graphics from on social media from the contact period last week included the Texas A&M Aggies, Auburn Tigers, SMU Mustangs, Baylor Bears, and even the Ragin’ Cajuns.

Given that it looks like both Louisiana and Texas were in contact with Gullette last week ahead of this critical season opener for each team, this was huge to get the win for Sark and the Longhorns. Texas needed a win on the field and on the recruiting trail for prospects like Gullette.

Moreover, Texas is currently one of just a few schools to offer Gullette. The other three schools currently on his offer sheet are the TCU Horned Frogs, Baylor, and Texas A&M. Since getting his Texas scholarship offer on June 24, Gullette has taken visits with the Longhorns, Aggies, and Horned Frogs.

It’s already starting to look like this recruitment will be an in-state battle with current and future (also past) conference foes. And Texas looks to sit in a good position with Gullette following this big win over the weekend. He reportedly (per Horns247, paid content) stated that Texas “played good” and that he “loved the way the defense flew around” in this win over Louisiana.

That is a good sign moving forward with the nation’s No. 327 2023 high school prospect, No. 16 edge rusher, and No. 51 prospect out of Texas (247Sports Composite).
