There are some very interesting developments that are coming about in one key race for a commitment this week pertaining to the 2022 Texas football recruiting class. Texas and new head coach Steve Sarkisian will be looking for a decision in their favor from the highly touted four-star St. James (LA) wide receiver Shazz Preston when he announces his commitment, likely coming this fall.

The Louisiana blue-chip wide receiver announced his top four finalist schools on social media last week. And that group of his top four schools included the LSU Tigers, Longhorns, Alabama Crimson Tide, and Georgia Bulldogs. As the lone school outside of the SEC remaining in the race to land Preston’s commitment, Texas could actually be gaining an edge of late.

Texas likely gained momentum in the recruitment of key skill position targets like Preston from the solid showing on the gridiron in Week 1 in that big win over the No. 23 ranked Louisiana Ragin’ Cajuns. That win over Louisiana also came in a decisive fashion for Texas, by the final score of 38-18.

And with LSU looking pretty bad on offense against the UCLA Bruins last weekend, the door could be opening for the other finalists to take hold of Preston’s recruitment.

Texas football gaining back momentum with key 4-Star WR Shazz Preston?

According to a report from Inside Texas on Sep. 7 (paid content), the Longhorns have a “legit chance” to win over the decision of Preston given the scheme fit and potential of the football program under Sark’s direction. That is good to hear for the Longhorns, as the wide receiver position could really use the boost of landing Preston in the 2022 class.

Texas did get an official visit from Preston back in June. He also visited with the USC Trojans officially, and Alabama and LSU unofficially in that same month.

If Texas can get a win over the Arkansas Razorbacks in the first road game of the season in Fayetteville next weekend, that would go a long way to keep the momentum in their favor in the race to land a commitment from Preston. What Texas does on the field week in and week out this fall will have a huge impact right away on the recruiting trail.

And the recruitment of Preston could end up being a good example of that. This is a big one for second-year wide receivers coach Andre Coleman to win on the trail.

While Preston is not the overall highest-rated wide receiver target remaining for the Longhorns 2022 class, he is surely an important one. He ranks as the nation’s No. 56 2022 high school prospect, No. 5 wide receiver, and No. 4 prospect out of Louisiana (247Sports Composite).
