Texas Football: 3 players that benefit most from Casey Thompson starting

There’s not a much less impactful start to this season imaginable for redshirt junior wide receiver Joshua Moore than one he’s off to through two games. And compared to the start he got off to last season, Moore is really sluggish out of the gates this fall. Moore currently ranks sixth on the team in receiving yards and is without a receiving touchdown.

Coming up with just three catches for 17 receiving yards and no touchdowns is not the way that Moore likely envisioned the start to this promising junior campaign for him. But there is still plenty of time to have that elusive breakthrough game.

In fact, if Moore does not get a touchdown against Rice next weekend, it will be the first of three seasons for him in his career where he didn’t get in the end zone at least once in the first three games. While Moore is definitely a candidate to have a bounce back game against the Owls on Sep. 18, that’s not what the goal should be for him.

Getting some type of rhythm and connection going between him and the quarterback will be key. Moore had a great connection with Card in the fall scrimmages and had a good thing going with Sam Ehlinger in the passing game last season.

Moore also had a really good connection in the Alamo Bowl against the Colorado Buffaloes with Thompson. Two of the four touchdown passes from Thompson in the Alamo Bowl win over Colorado went to Moore. This could be really promising for Moore and the Texas passing game as a whole to restore the connection with Thompson.
