Matt Wells has ran up his welcome in Lubbock

There’s no doubt that this was a huge game for the former Utah State Aggies head coach Wells with the Red Raiders. Coming into this meeting with Texas, Wells was already one win off matching his previous season-high from each of the last two years. Wells had won two games with the Red Raiders in each of the last two seasons.

With Texas Tech off to a hot start this fall, coming into this meeting with Texas with a record of 3-0, it looked like Wells’ squad could really challenge the Longhorns. That didn’t wind up being the case as Texas took control of this game early and never really looked back. Texas already had a 14-0 lead by the end of the first quarter, and then a four-possession lead by halftime.

Following this loss to the Longhorns by a lofty 35-point margin, Wells’ record in Big 12 play as Texas Tech’s head coach now sits at a rather poor 5-14. That pace definitely won’t be good enough for Wells to convince the Texas Tech administration that he is worth keeping around heading into next offseason.

There is still plenty of time for Wells to turn this thing around. But this loss to Texas was not the way that Texas Tech fans envisioned their start to Big 12 play going.

Texas Tech has a critical matchup with the West Virginia Mountaineers and head coach Neal Brown on the road next weekend. That game is starting to feel like it is must-win territory for Wells and his squad.
