Texas has the best ground game in the Big 12, by far

Each passing week, it feels like there is one “overreaction” on the list that isn’t so much of one. And the honorary spot on this week’s list of overreactions goes to this part.

Texas had such a dominant ground game in the last two weeks that it has gone a long way to help this fan base put the poor performance on the ground in the loss to Arkansas behind them. Now, for Longhorns fans to truly be able to put the loss to Arkansas two weekends ago behind them, Sark and his staff will need to continue to build momentum in Big 12 play.

Yet, it is worth celebrating what we’ve seen from this insanely potent Texas ground game in the last two weeks. Star sophomore running back Bijan Robinson led the way again with 137 rushing yards on 18 attempts (7.6 yards per carry), no rushing touchdowns, and 54 receiving yards on two catches, good for one touchdown catch.

On the season now, Bijan has registered nearly 600 total yards from scrimmage, 6.2 yards per carry, and seven total touchdowns.

Texas has also got really solid performances out of the trio of true freshman running back Jonathon Brooks, junior Roschon Johnson, and redshirt sophomore Keilan Robinson. Even if you take out the whopping 98 yards after initial contact that Bijan registered in this game, that rest of the Texas rushers compiled 120 yards after contact.

As a team, Texas is averaging just shy of 270 rushing yards per game, more than six yards per carry, and four rushing scores. Baylor leads the Big 12 in rushing yards per game and yards per carry this season. But that came against the likes of FCS Texas Southern, Kansas, Texas State, and Iowa State.

Iowa State was really the only competent team in that group. Texas has done great things on the ground so far this season against much tougher competition especially from the Louisiana Ragin’ Cajuns, Arkansas, and Texas Tech.

It’s pretty clear at this point that Texas has the best ground attack in the Big 12 this fall.
