Texas Football: Other WRs worried about Evan Stewart outshining them?
It’s hard to tell exactly where the 2022 Texas football recruiting class is trending of late for the elite five-star Frisco-Liberty wide receiver Evan Stewart. For a while, it looked like head coach Dan Mullen and the Florida Gators were taking the lead with Stewart. But a lot of that momentum has seemingly pulled back in recent weeks.
A lot will hinge on the potential looming visit for Stewart with the Longhorns on the important Big 12 game weekend against the Oklahoma State Cowboys. That is the anticipated weekend where Texas and new head coach Steve Sarkisian look to host Stewart for a visit.
You could make a very good argument, just a few months out from the Early Signing Period, that Stewart is the most important remaining prospect for the Longhorns 2022 class at this point of the cycle. Stewart is the highest-rated 2022 prospect that Texas realistically has a shot to land at this point.
Texas football should still keep the focus on landing 5-Star WR Evan Stewart
And with fellow five-star wideout Kevin Coleman starting to trend away from the Longhorns of late, landing Stewart has become that much more important.
One interesting rumor that emerged out of the weekend, though, came courtesy of an update on the recruiting trail following all of the big visits for the Big 12 opener, per Horns247 (paid content). This Horns247 report noted that other top wideout prospects for the Longhorns 2022 class could potentially be worried about Stewart’s presence were he to commit to Texas.
The emphasis of this rumor is the fact that the new NIL rules would dramatically favor Stewart, thanks to his talent level and social media presence, and overshadow other wideouts with Texas.
This does sound interesting, since it’s hard to know who this could revolve around. And it probably won’t mean a whole lot in the end. The priority for the Longhorns staff will still remain getting Stewart back committed to the 2022 class, and keeping solid depth at the wide receiver position in general.
Texas couldn’t do much better at the skill positions to round out this recruiting cycle than by landing a commitment from Stewart. He ranks as the nation’s No. 3 2022 high school prospect, and the top overall wide receiver and prospect out of Texas (247Sports Composite).
