Texas Football: Longhorns losing 4-Star IOL Earnest Greene to UGA
A particular area of emphasis for the 2022 Texas football recruiting class this fall is along the offensive line. Texas has a few notable remaining targets on the board for the 2022 class just a couple of months ahead of the Early Signing Period.
Two of the most notable targets remaining along the offensive line for Texas at this point of the recruiting cycle are the elite five-star Bowie offensive guard Devon Campbell and four-star St. John Bosco interior offensive lineman Earnest Greene. The former of those two is likely one of the two or three most important remaining prospects for the Longhorns 2022 class on the board among all of the position groups.
Greene is a target that could help new offensive line coach/offensive coordinator Kyle Flood build out some real depth along the offensive line in the 2022 class. Texas has invested a great amount of time and energy of late into the recruitment of Greene. And it seems like the coaching staff was making progress with him heading into the fall.

But the writing is on the wall now that a new potential frontrunner is emerging with Greene of late. The most recent official visit that Greene took came with the Georgia Bulldogs and head coach Kirby Smart a few weekends ago. Greene visited Athens, GA, back on Sep. 18. And the momentum has started to build up in Georgia’s favor with Greene in the weeks since that visit.
The most recent expert 247Sports Crystal Ball Prediction in for Greene projects his commitment to land with Georgia. And the Rivals FutureCast has most of their analysts and publishers also projecting Greene’s commitent to go to Georgia.
Georgia has only continued to look more and more impressive as this season moved along. That is a train of momentum that will be difficult for anyone to slow down at this point. Granted, there are still a few more visits on the books for Greene this fall.
Texas is scheduled to host Greene for a crucial official visit during a big game weekend on Oct. 16. That is building to likely be the most important visit weekend of the fall during any game for the Longhorns. Texas is set to face head coach Mike Gundy and the Oklahoma State Cowboys at home on Oct. 16.
Some other schools to watch that are still likely to get visits with Greene this fall are the Ohio State Buckeyes and USC Trojans. There is still a chance too that the Clemson Tigers and Alabama Crimson Tide could get a visit from Greene this fall.
Ohio State did host Greene for a visit last month too. But it sounds like there is still a chance he could return to Columbus for another visit before the end of this regular season.
If I had to pin down a top three or four in the race to land the commitment of Greene at the moment, it looks to be Texas, Ohio State, Georgia, and USC. It’s hard to say that Georgia isn’t the frontrunner with Greene right now. But don’t rule out that other trio of schools in the running for Greene in Ohio State, Texas, and USC.
Texas only has one blue-chip commit along the offensive line in the 2022 class as of the morning of Oct. 4. That is why it is so important for Flood and the Longhorns to hit on the duo of Greene and Campbell to help the depth in this spot before National Signing Day arrives early next year.
