Texas Football: 5 overreactions from the meltdown loss vs. OK State
Passing game is in trouble without Jordan Whittington
We got to see some of the effects to the Texas offense that the absence of the redshirt sophomore wide receiver Jordan Whittington could have this fall. With Whittington set to miss the rest of the regular season after undergoing surgery last week, the receiving corps was thin against the Pokes over the weekend.
Sark and the Longhorns are missing a very elusive and agile wide receiver that can do some damage in the middle of the field and getting the ball in short routes and behind the line of scrimmage in Whittington. It really looked like Whittington and true freshman breakout wide receiver Xavier Worthy were going to spearhead the passing game among the wideouts this fall.
Texas saw the former four-star recruit and junior wide receiver Marcus Washington get the start in Whittington’s absence against Oklahoma State. And in this spotlight, Washington came up wiht a decent outing where he registered two catches for 60 yards and no touchdowns. But he caught both balls that went his way from Thompson. And of his 60 receiving yards in this game, Washington did get 30 after the catch. That came on a big 58-yard reception in the first half.
Washington was arguably the best Longhorns wide receiver in this game. He definitely wasn’t the problem here. But Texas did get two untimely drops and two of the lowest receiving grades of the season out of the likes of redshirt junior Joshua Moore and Worthy.
Texas had a really tough time getting things going against the trio of Jarrick Bernard-Converse, Christian Holmes, and Jason Taylor II in this game. Moore had just two catches on five targets as he couldn’t find much room to run. And Worthy five catches for just 28 yards on nine targets.
Moore and Worthy need to step up in the absence of Whittington. Those two looked really in the prior week in the loss to Oklahoma. Thompson needs to get on the same page with these two ahead of the meeting with Baylor on Oct. 30. He was completely out of syn in the second half with Moore and Worthy.
