Shazz Preston, WR

There are two wide receivers that the Longhorns had an up and down run with since the turn of the calendar year that are targets of the 2022 class. Those two blue-chip wide receivers are five-star St. Marys product Kevin Coleman and four-star St. James product Shazz Preston.

At this point of the recruiting cycle, though, it feels like Texas is sitting in a much more favorable position to land a commitment from Preston than they are to get Coleman. Some of the top Florida schools, namely the Florida State Seminoles, seem to be taking the lead for Coleman.

Meanwhile, the top school that was in the running for Preston just a few weeks ago took a hit after head coach Ed Orgeron agreed to part ways with the LSU Tigers after this season. Orgeron is a coach that connected well with a number of top in-state prospects on the recruiting trail.

And this is something that is likely going to set LSU back in the race to land a commitment from Preston. That is why we could see an abrupt change soon in how the top schools stack up for Preston. If he’s shaky on LSU now and sold on what a school like Texas or the Texas A&M Aggies can bring to the table for him, expect a commitment within the next few weeks.

Preston does appear to be one of the top blue-chip prospects to watch in this cycle that could commit in the coming weeks. It would be pretty surprising to see him take his recruitment beyond the Early Signing Period.

It would be a longshot for Sark, second-year wide receivers coach Andre Coleman, and the Longhorns to get Preston during the bye week. But if there’s one to watch that could come seemingly out of nowhere soon, the writing is on the wall that it could come from Preston.
