Texas Football: 5-Star Jacoby Mathews says he got ‘all love’ from staff
Although it still seems like this coaching staff is facing long odds, there’s still a chance for the 2022 Texas football recruiting class to ultimately win over the commitment of the elite five-star Ponchatoula safety Jacoby Mathews. The longtime highly-touted Texas target was on campus last weekend in Austin for the matchup against the No. 12 ranked Oklahoma State Cowboys and head coach Mike Gundy.
While new head coach Steve Sarkisian and the Longhorns couldn’t hang on to another second-half lead in a meltdown of a loss to Oklahoma State, the weekend still came away leaving a positive impression on a number of the key visiting prospects on campus.
And Mathews appears to be one of those key prospects that the Longhorns made the right impression with. Mathews is a target on the recruiting trail that the Longhorns are facing an uphill battle with. While he was on the staff’s radar even dating back to the days under former Texas head coach Tom Herman, the Longhorns have struggled to lock in as the top school with him.
5-Star S Jacoby Mathews had a successful official visit with Texas football last weekend
It sounds like Mathews enjoyed himself during his visit to the Forty Acres last weekend. According to a report from Horns247 on Oct. 22 (paid content), Mathews said that he got “all love from the coaches” during his visit. And he mentioned that he feels like the Texas defense “did everything he needed to see”.
Unless you look at that from more of a cryptic point of view, it sounds like Mathews enjoyed his official visit with the Longhorns last weekend. This is big for Texas.
The official visit that Mathews took with Texas over the weekend was just one of many high-profile OV’s that he has on the books this fall. Texas will need to hang on with Mathews through official visits that he has scheduled with the likes of the Georgia Bulldogs, Florida Gators, and Alabama Crimson Tide.
Georgia, Florida, and Alabama are some enormous competitors on the recruiting trail for the Longhorns in the race to land a commitment from Mathews. This will be a sizable challenge for new cornerbacks coach Terry Joseph and safeties coach Blake Gideon as his top recruiters this fall.
There is some time, though, for Texas to continue to make progress in the recruitment of Mathews. At the moment, he is scheduled to announce his decision on Jan. 2, 2022. Texas has a couple of weeks even after the Early Signing Period to continue to make the right impression with Mathews.
Texas has a strong group at the safety position in the 2022 class. But they don’t have anyone that is a top 30 ranked high school prospect in the nation in the 2022 class, like Mathews. This would be a massive get if Texas can win this uphill battle to land a commitment from Mathews.
