Texas Football: 3 overreactions from humiliating loss to Iowa State
This should now be the opportunity for Hudson Card
When the Longhorns were getting dismantled by a tough Arkansas Razorbacks defense on the road in Fayetteville back on Sep. 11, Sark pulled the plug on Card in favor of Thompson at the quarterback position. The opposite happened for Sark and the Longhorns in another tough loss, this time at the hands of Iowa State on the road in Ames.
After just two completions on six passing attempts, two passing yards, no passing touchdowns, and no picks, Sark took Thompson out of the game in the first half in favor of Card. And while Card got a little bit more going in this game on offense than Thompson did, it still didn’t do much to make an impact on the final score.
Card finished up this game with 14 completions on 23 passing attempts, with 101 passing yards, one passing touchdown, and no picks. But he was also sacked a whopping four times on just 27 dropbacks. He was also pressured an additional 10 times. It’s hard to succeed for any quarterback that is coming under pressure on more than half of their dropbacks.
All in all, this feels like Sark and the Longhorns have to move forward with Card as the starting quarterback at least through the Kansas game next weekend. Texas gave Thompson a chance when the offense looked better with him behind center than Card. Now, it’s Card’s shot to show that he can lead the offense in the right direction down the stretch this fall.
