Texas football gets a shot to finally snap their losing skid that is now up to four games this weekend in a battle with head coach Lance Leipold and the lowly Kansas Jayhawks. New head coach Steve Sarkisian needs to get his team back on track down the stretch this season after losing four straight through one of the most difficult stretches of the Big 12 slate.
The narrative for Sark and the Longhorns in the last few games was blowing second-half leads. But the way that the Longhorns lost to head coach Matt Campell and the Iowa State Cyclones last weekend didn’t fit into the traditional narrative this team had established in the prior three games.
Texas was pretty thoroughly dominated by Iowa State in the second half of this road meeting on Nov. 6, which ended in the Cyclones’ favor by the final score of 30-7. This loss to Iowa State also moved the Longhorns to their first losing record of the season thus far.
Following the 23-point loss to Iowa State on Nov. 6, Texas is sporting a record of 4-5 (2-4 Big 12). At this point, the Longhorns are just scrapping for bowl eligibility throughout the rest of the November slate.
Meanwhile, Kansas comes into this meeting with the Longhorns sporting a record of 1-8 (0-6 Big 12). The lone win for Kansas on the season came over FCS South Dakota by a three-point margin back in their regular season opener. Last week’s game for Kansas also resulted in a 35-10 loss to their in-state rival Kansas State.
Texas comes into this meeting with Kansas as a 31-point favorite just over 24 hours from kickoff. And the ESPN matchup predictor (based on the Football Power Index) gives Texas a whopping 98.5 percent chance to beat Kansas at DKR this weekend.

In the first night game during the Big 12 slate at home so far this season, Texas will get the 6:30 p.m. CT kickoff slot televised on ESPNU. The game will also be on the Longhorn Radio Network for the radio/audio live stream for the Kansas game.
Injured Texas football players
There are multiple smaller injuries that the Longhorns are dealing with after the Iowa State game. It is also worth noting that there will be some new absences from Texas losing players to the NCAA Transfer Portal.
Most notably, Texas will be very thin at wide receiver from here on out. Redshirt sophomore wide receiver Jordan Whittington is still absent as he’s dealing with injury. But the new note among the wide receiver absences for Texas is the fact that redshirt junior wide receiver Joshua Moore is gone.
Moore put his name in the transfer portal earlier this week. That move came after Moore had a spat with the coaching staff in practice last week.
The fact that Moore and Whittington are both absent now means that Texas has really just one proven threat at wide receiver in freshman standout Xavier Worthy. There will be a lot of pressure on Worthy from here on out this fall.
Moreover, Texas has some other potential gametime decisions in terms of injuries for the Kansas game. Star sophomore running back Bijan Robinson looks to be questionable heading into the weekend, as he’s dealing with an upper-body injury following last weekend’s loss to Iowa State.
Missing Bijan would already be bad enough for the Longhorns. The fact that junior running back Roschon Johnson could also be questionable makes matters worse in the backfield. Roschon has a turf toe injury he’s dealt with this week.
Two other injuries of note this week are to redshirt junior quarterback Casey Thompson and senior linebacker DeMarvion Overshown.
Sark has not officially made the call yet as to who will be the starting quarterback this weekend. It might make the decision a bit easier on him knowing that Thompson is still dealing with a thumb injury heading into this game. Thompson and sophomore quarterback Hudson Card are listed as “or” on this week’s depth chart after the former of the two signal-callers was pulled in the midst of the Iowa State game on Nov. 6.
Overshown had a tough run in terms of injuries of late. He suffered injuries in the loss to the Oklahoma State Cowboys a little less than one month ago and in the loss to Iowa State last weekend.
Texas might be without Overshown this weekend as he’s now dealing with a lower-body injury. But this is also something that could fall to a gametime decision.
Picking Texas football vs. Kansas
This game feels like a spot where the Longhorns are going to come out and dominate right from the first possession. Outside of their loss to the Oklahoma Sooners at home a few weeks back, the Jayhawks didn’t really remain competitive in any game during the Big 12 slate this fall.
Whether it is Card or Thompson in the game for Sark and the Longhorns, the offense should be able to dominate the Kansas defense in almost every respect. Texas needs to right the ship and build some confidence ahead of the last two games of the regular season.
