Charles Wright, QB

The talk from Sark of what he and his staff see out of the Texas quarterback room gives a clear indication that some type of attrition is ahead for this position group in the impending offseason. And one of the first to go could be the former Iowa State Cyclones three-star quarterback commit and Austin, TX, native Charles Wright.

This true freshman signal-caller was the lone quarterback signee in the Longhorns 2021 recruiting class. Former Texas head coach Tom Herman went to flip the commitment of Wright from Iowa State to the Longhorns following the loss of the now Alabama freshman quarterback and former four-star recruit Jalen Milroe.

The 6-foot-1 and 200-pound Texas High product has also moved in the wrong direction on the quarterback depth chart this fall. He’s not even the third quarterback up on the depth chart throughout the bulk of Big 12 play thus far. Wright was beat out by a former walk-on of late for the third spot on the quarterback depth chart.

On the depth chart for the Kansas game last week, former walk-on Ben Ballard was listed as the third-string quarterback.

This would give the indication also that it might not make sense for Wright to stick around on the Forty Acres if he doesn’t feel like he’s trending up with the coaching staff. With Texas also trying to take on two quarterbacks in the 2022 class between four-stars Maalik Murphy and Devin Brown (if they can flip his commitment from USC), it could be even tougher for Wright to move up the depth chart next year than this fall.
