Texas emerging as front runner for 4-Star QB Devin Brown?
As a top target remaining on the board for new head coach Steve Sarkisian and the 2022 Texas football recruiting class this fall, four-star Corner Canyon (UT) quarterback and USC Trojans commit Devin Brown is definitely a name to watch at this point of the fall. Texas does have one quarterback currently committed in the 2022 class, but it looks like Sark and his staff want to add more depth to this position group entering next offseason.
Brown has very quickly emerged as one of the Longhorns’ top priorities in the 2022 class in the weeks ahead of the Early Signing Period. In fact, he might be the top priority among four-star prospects at this point of the fall for Sark, first-year quarterbacks coach AJ Milwee, and the Longhorns 2022 class.
There is some pretty clear momentum that is forming between the Utah product Brown and the Longhorns’ staff of late too. Texas hosted Brown for an official visit on what originally looked to be an unfortunate weekend to do so. His official visit came back on Nov. 13, in the embarrassing loss for the Longhorns in overtime at home against the Kansas Jayhawks.
Texas football could reportedly be emerging as a front runner for 4-Star QB Devin Brown
Yet, that loss to Kansas doesn’t appear to have phased Brown one bit. The interest he holds in Texas appears to be even stronger after that official visit.
So where does Texas currently sit in respect to their standing among the top schools for Brown at this point of his recruitment?
We definitely can’t rule USC out in terms of keeping his commitment through the Early Signing Period. And we should expect a decision to come down from Brown as to whether he will keep his commitment to USC or flip elsewhere around the Early Signing Period.
The biggest competition, outside of USC, for the Longhorns to ultimately land the commitment of Brown looks to be head coach Ryan Day and the surging Ohio State Buckeyes. Ohio State hosted Brown on an official visit this weekend, which looked to be really good timing.
Ohio State downed the No. 7 ranked Michigan State Spartans in a dominant outing where they already posted a 49-0 lead by halftime. That had to have a very positive impact on Brown coming out of the official visit in Columbus.
But according to a Horns247 report heading into the weekend (paid content), Texas could be emerging as the top school to flip the commitment of Brown if the momentum keeps heading in their direction in the next few weeks. It does look like it will be Texas and Ohio State duking this one out to try and flip Brown from USC.
The pitch that the Longhorns’ staff is able to give Brown in the coming weeks should have a major impact on his decision in the end. The same could be said for the Buckeyes and the Trojans. But the Longhorns have the major task to one-up the pitch of a team that is a national title contender in Ohio State.
The lone current quarterback commit in the Longhorns 2022 class is the four-star Junipero Serra product, Maalik Murphy. You would figure that both Brown and Murphy could compete for the starting job next year if Texas is able to sign them both in the 2022 class.
