It appears that the consistent efforts from the newly extended Michigan State Spartans head coach Mel Tucker to try and flip the commitment of four-star Lewisville wide receiver Armani Winfield from the 2022 Texas football recruiting class could be starting to pay off. On Black Friday (Nov. 26), Texas officially lost the commitment of Winfield.

In all likelihood, this is going to be followed up by essentially a flip of Winfield’s commitment from the Longhorns to the Spartans. Tucker and the Spartans maintained constant contact with Winfield since the summer. They definitely made the biggest push to try and flip his commitment in the last few months.

Winfield announced on his Twitter timeline on the afternoon of Nov. 26 that he would be de-committing from Texas and announcing his ultimate decision during the Early Signing Period. While this could mean that Winfield already has a decision in mind, we won’t know it at least for another few weeks.

The writing was on the wall for a few weeks now that new head coach Steve Sarkisian, second-year wide receivers coach Andre Coleman, and the Longhorns could eventually lose the commitment of Winfield. Michigan State’s constant efforts to flip his commitment now looks to soon pay off.

Winfield was originally Sark’s first commit that stuck in the Longhorns 2022 class. But Texas has experienced plenty of volatility recruiting at the wide receiver position in the 2022 class. In total, Winfield is the third blue-chip wide receiver to de-commit from the Longhorns 2022 class if you go back to the days under former Texas head coach Tom Herman.

The other two are the elite five-star Frisco-Liberty wide receiver Evan Stewart and former four-star Lancaster product Phaizon Wilson.

At this point, Sark and the Longhorns are left with just one commit at the wide receiver position in the 2022 class. And that lone wideout commit left in the 2022 class is the speedy and elusive Spearman (TX) product, Brenen Thompson.

There is clearly momentum for Winfield to give his commitment to the Spartans when it’s all said and done. The five most recent Rivals FutureCasts from their analysts and publishers went Michigan State’s way. And the eight most recent expert 247Sports Crystal Ball Predictions have Winfield’s commitment landing with the Spartans.

It’s likely only a matter of time before this former blue-chip Longhorns commit lands in Michigan State’s 2022 class. Losing Winfield is certainly a big hit to Sark and the Longhorns 2022 class. And it might put the tensions with Coleman on this staff on thin ice heading into next offseason.

This makes the importance of landing top remaining uncommitted wideout targets on the recruiting trail such as four-star Klein Cain product Matthew Golden and Stewart paramount for the Longhorns 2022 class. It will be difficult to recover from losing the commitment of Winfield if not.
