Would a Quinn Ewers commitment flip 5-Star WR Evan Stewart to Texas?

As the Quinn Ewers saga continues for the Texas football program early this week, a lot of storylines will cross wires between the NCAA Transfer Portal and the recruiting trail. At this point, these narratives between the transfer portal and the recruiting trail for the top high school prospects that Texas is going after seem to be one in the same at times.

While it seems like there aren’t many answers coming out of the Ewers right now as he takes some visits in the last couple of days, the decision timeline likely won’t take too long for Ewers. It is pretty clear by now that Ewers wants to be able to draw some elite talent with him wherever he goes next out of the transfer portal.

And for that to happen in a really effective manner, Ewers will need a decision in place before the start of the Early Signing Period on Dec. 15. That gives less than two weeks if Ewers wants a decision in place to draw in some of the top 2022 high school prospects in the country at his next landing spot.

All eyes over the weekend were on Ewers’ visit that he took with head coach Joey McGuire and the Texas Tech Red Raiders in Lubbock. He specifically took his Texas Tech visit on Dec. 5, and it seemed like that was the talk of the town for everyone that’s a Longhorns fan.

There was a lot of noise coming from the Texas Tech side during and after the visit with Ewers over the weekend. But how realistic is it for Ewers to have his sights set on Texas Tech over Texas?

We will likely have to wait between another one and three days for more clarity on the situation. But my personal feeling on the matter is still that Texas has at least a slight edge over Texas Tech given that there’s not already a commitment to the Red Raiders in place for Ewers.

And the fact that Ewers wants to take advantage of NIL and the ability to draw elite talent with him to his next program bodes well for Texas on paper over Texas Tech. But there are going to be other factors taken into account that will keep Texas Tech around in this discussion by most accounts.

A commitment from Quinn Ewers to Texas football could reportedly mean a flip with WR Evan Stewart

One interesting storyline that has come about of late is the idea that Ewers could potentially bring an elite recruit with him to Texas if he were to land on the Forty Acres. According to a report from Inside Texas (part of the On3 Network, paid content), there are some Texas recruits that believe that Ewers is still likely to land with the Longhorns.

And this report mentions that at least some Texas recruits believe Ewers will commit to this program, and bring the Texas A&M Aggies commit and elite five-star Frisco-Libertywide receiver Evan Stewart with him. It’s also worth noting that the Texas coaching staff still appears to be putting their full attention and energy into the recruitment of Stewart, despite his commitment to Texas A&M last week.

A 247Sports report from the weekend (paid content) noted that Ewers has been in contact with Stewart and the former four-star Texas commit/Lewisville wide receiver, Armani Winfield, since entering the transfer portal last week. That would be huge for the Longhorns to be able to get this pair of former Texas wide receiver commits Stewart and Winfield back to the Forty Acres.

That does seem like a stretch, though, since most of the reports coming out that link back to Texas recruits don’t look to put a whole lot of respect on the idea that Texas Tech is a legitimate contender to land Ewers. From what I can tell, all of the smoke surrounding the interest from Texas Tech in Ewers (and vice versa) is real.

Ewers is set to take a visit with new head coach Sonny Dykes and the TCU Horned Frogs on Dec. 6. Although, it sounds like the top two schools at this point for Ewers are Texas and Texas Tech.

I covered over the weekend the idea of Texas Tech being a real threat for Ewers. Texas should still be considered at least the slight favorite, and if they can land him in the end the dominos that fall as a result will be interesting. Obviously, you shouldn’t rule Stewart to the Longhorns out if Ewers lands here. But I’m not ready to make that a legitimate possibility until we know Ewers’ decision.

No matter what, it’s likely only a matter of days before we know the official decision from Ewers out of the transfer portal after leaving the Ohio State Buckeyes last week. If he does land at Texas, Stewart could be one name to watch among multiple others that will likely find it inspiring to land on the Forty Acres to play with Ewers.
