Some news that was somewhat anticipated, but was never a sure thing, did emerge for the Texas football program in pursuit of the former Ohio State Buckeyes freshman quarterback Quinn Ewers. Texas head coach Steve Sarkisian did already get an in-home visit with Ewers essentially upon the day he entered the NCAA Transfer Portal on Dec. 3.

But that was never really a guarantee that Ewers would have an in-person visit with Sark and the Longhorns in Austin. Ewers is a former Texas commit and grew up a huge fan of the Longhorns. He is very familiar with this campus and the coaching staff. Granted, there are some new facilities on campus since he was committed to the Longhorns 2022 class last fall and this is a different staff since his last visit.

According to a report from Anwar Richardson of Orangebloods on the morning of Dec. 8, the Longhorns are now scheduled to get a visit from Ewers on Dec. 11. And he is reportedly down to the Texas Tech Red Raiders and the Longhorns as he could reportedly narrow down his decision timeline by

It also looks like Ewers is now down to just two schools, as anticipated this week, for his decision out of the transfer portal. Texas and Texas Tech are going to be the two schools he boils his decision down to.

Ewers did visit with the TCU Horned Frogs, but that possibility was quickly ruled out. TCU took on a commitment from three-star quarterback Josh Hoover in their 2022 class on the same day that they had a visit with Ewers. That likely didn’t bode well for their chances to land him at the time. And that sentiment proved to be true this week.

This whole situation is looking much better for Sark and the Longhorns compared to when there was so much buzz in Texas Tech’s corner during his visit to Lubbock last weekend. It was good news for Texas that Ewers didn’t commit to Texas Tech when he was actually present in Lubbock over the weekend.

But we still can’t rule out the possibility that Texas Tech can ultimately land a commitment from Ewers. There are advantages that Texas Tech can offer Ewers, depending on what his priorities are, that Texas might not be able to.

Yet, I still believe Texas was already positioned well in this recruitment out of the transfer portal. The fact that Texas now looks to get the final in-person visit from Ewers is even better.

The Ewers saga is likely to wrap up just ahead of the Early Signing Period, which begins specifically on Dec. 15. It sounds like Ewers wants to get some other top talent coming with him among 2022 prospects to the Forty Acres. Committing by Dec. 13 could likely get that done to some degree.
