The quarterback position in the NCAA Transfer Portal right now is one that has complete focus from fans of the Texas football program. Texas is putting their full effort and attention right now to landing a commitment from the former Ohio State Buckeyes freshman quarterback and elite five-star recruit Quinn Ewers out of the transfer portal likely within the next week or so.

But this is going to be a two-horse race for the Longhorns and head coach Steve Sarkisian with former Baylor Bears associate head coach Joey McGuire and the Texas Tech Red Raiders. Ewers is set to be on a visit in Austin this weekend with the Longhorns. And he had a visit in Lubbock last weekend with Texas Tech.

It seems like Texas holds a decent edge right now in the race to land a commitment out of the transfer portal with Ewers, but Texas Tech is still a real contender with him.

Who Texas football could keep as a contingency if things don’t work out with Quinn Ewers?

I do want to say that I do believe that Texas is the favorite to land Ewers right now, but there are no guarantees with this right now. While Sark and the Longhorns look to have the opportunity to get the last word with Ewers during his visit to Austin this weekend, Texas should have a contingency in place in case this falls through somehow.

Even if Texas does get a commitment from Ewers, it sounds like the coaching staff is still willing to take on two quarterbacks heading into the offseason along with the four-star commit Maalik Murphy. It’s worth noting that the Longhorns are still scouting out other options regardless of what happens with Ewers.

Here’s a look into three quarterbacks that the Longhorns should have as contingencies in case they don’t get Ewers out of the transfer portal, or to keep in mind even if they do land the former Buckeye.
