The one target of the 2022 Texas football recruiting class that I was the most confident about head coach Steve Sarkisian getting a commitment from on the first day of the Early Signing Period (Dec. 15) was the three-star Grand Prairie wide receiver Savion Red. This former SMU Mustangs commit was about the closest thing to a lock it seemed that Texas had heading into the first signing day this week.

And that came to fruition on the afternoon of the first signing day for the Longhorns 2022 class. Red announced his commitment to Texas on the afternoon of Dec. 15, bringing the Longhorns to a whopping four commits on the first signing day thus far.

More could be to come for the Longhorns too on the first signing day.

For now, Longhorns fans must be excited about what’s to come in the 2021 class. Texas looks good on both sides of the ball at the moment in the midst of the afternoon of the first signing day.

Texas football brings in 3-Star WR Savion Red on the first signing day

Texas got a commitment and signed National Letter of Intent out of the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex product Red on the first signing day. He picked Texas over SMU, which were the top two schools for his Dec. 15 decision.

Red had originally received his Texas scholarship offer on Nov. 29. The offer from Texas went Red’s way after the Longhorns missed out on the commitment of the elite five-star Frisco-Liberty wide receiver Evan Stewart to the in-state rival Texas A&M Aggies.

But the Longhorns might see Red play at running back for them given his 5-foot-10 and 210-pound frame and versatile skill set. He’s also a good athlete that is definitely versatile enough to play at either running back or out of the slot at receiver.

Red is a two-sport athlete that plays both basketball and football for Grand Prairie High School. He also brings an underrated amount of elusiveness and agility to the table when he has the ball in his hands in the open field. Making opposing tacklers miss is going to be a specialty of his on short and intermediate routes, or out of the backfield if Texas plays him at running back.

A lot of his positional situation with Texas likely hinges on whether the Longhorns get a commitment out of four-star Winter Park running back Terrance Gibbs in the 2022 class. Red could thrive at either position group for the Longhorns, though.

Texas now has four commitments from the first signing day as of the later afternoon. The list is now up to four-star Little Elm cornerback Terrance Brooks, three-star Arlington-Seguin athlete/wide receiver Xavion Brice, and three-star Westlake edge rusher Ethan Burke.
