Houston

I think one of the more natural landing spots for the Temple, TX, native Wiley would be with the former West Virginia Mountaineers head coach Dana Holgorsen and the Houston Cougars. As one of the five schools that sent Wiley a scholarship offer coming out of high school, Houston definitely could hold an edge if there are multiple programs vying to land him out of the transfer portal this offseason.

There are some valid connections for Wiley with the Cougars. The tight ends coach that was at Houston during Wiley’s recruitment, former Rice Owls tight end James Casey, is still in the same role with Holgorsen’s staff.

The Casey connection would definitely be something to watch here. While Major Applewhite was the head coach while Houston was pursuing out of Temple High School during the 2019 recruiting cycle, Holgorsen kept some of the same assistants on staff through this year.

What could also add to the reasoning why Wiley could land with the Cougars is how needy this team could be at the tight end position. Houston does have one tight end committed in their 2022 class, but he’s a three-star hailing out of Belton High School that ranks outside of the top 100 prospects at his position in the nation.

Wiley could help the Houston tight end room right away. This could make sense for all parties involved given the immediate path to playing time and prior connections with this coaching staff.
