North Carolina

A potential viable landing spot for Thompson to consider out of the transfer portal is a school that pursued him when he was coming out of Newcastle as a four-star dual-threat quarterback during the 2018 cycle. The North Carolina Tar Heels and former Texas head coach Mack Brown are likely seeking out their next starting quarterback when they enter next offseason.

Brown and the Tar Heels are likely to lose star quarterback Sam Howell to the 2022 NFL Draft, leaving them without a returning starter at the position next year. That would make sense for the Tar Heels to seek out someone proven and experienced, such as Thompson, who can make an immediate impact for them in the wake of the post-Howell era in Chapel Hill.

Two reasons why the Tar Heels could be a good landing spot for Thompson out of the transfer portal come to my mind.

The first is that the Tar Heels made a spirited run at recruiting Thompson out of high school during the 2018 cycle. UNC offered Thompson, and there are other valid connections on this coaching staff under Mack. Tar Heels’ offensive coordinator Phil Longo was on staff with the Miami Hurricanes when they were recruiting him during the 2018 cycle.

The opportunity to come in and start right away for Thompson could be a potentially appealing reason for him to come to Chapel Hill playing for a staff that he is familiar with.

And the second reason why it makes sense for Thompson to land in Chapel Hill is the fact that this was a very explosive offense over the course of the last two seasons. He played for a good offense for the Longhorns in 2021. Thompson could have the chance again to put up big numbers with a likely solid Tar Heels offense in 2022.
