Charles Wright, QB

It seems like a realistic next step for the Longhorns, especially after head coach Steve Sarkisian and quarterbacks coach AJ Milwee saw Thompson enter the transfer portal, is to try to find another proven QB ahead of the 2022 season. Texas doesn’t have much proven experience left in the quarterback room.

Card is really the lone quarterback for Texas at this point that has any sort of significant game reps under his belt.

I would watch out for one more Texas quarterback to enter the transfer portal in due time if Sark and the Longhorns turn to this route to bring in a more proven backup for Ewers. Texas might try to seek out an experienced backup quarterback that is willing to come in and fill the backup role right away.

That would leave someone like the former three-star hometown recruit and Iowa State Cyclones commit Charles Wright as a name to watch to potentially leave the Forty Acres soon. I’ve mentioned Wright as a potential transfer portal entrant to watch for the Longhorns entering the offseason, and with good reason.

Wright was passed up on the depth chart at one point this fall by a former walk-on quarterback in Ben Ballard. There’s a clear lack of trust as to what Wright can do from the Texas coaching staff right now. If Wright can find a more advantageous spot in another quarterback room with another program, he might make that move very soon.

It surely doesn’t look like Wright will even be competing for backup reps on the Forty Acres anytime soon.
