Texas and Baylor are the top two schools for transfer CB Ryan Watts
Most of the talk concerning the NCAA Transfer Portal for the Texas football program since the addition of the former Ohio State Buckeyes freshman quarterback Quinn Ewers has concerned the pursuit of a teammate of his. Fellow former Buckeye and redshirt freshman cornerback Ryan Watts is now the topic of speculation as to who the next transfer portal addition could be for Texas early this offseason.
The 6-foot-3 and 205-pound lengthy defensive back Watts was pursued by the Longhorns during his recruitment out of high school. But he would eventually commit to Ohio State over other top schools such as Texas and the Oklahoma Sooners.
Watts got some snaps in a deep Ohio State defensive backfield during his first two years in Columbus. But that wasn’t enough to keep him around with the Buckeyes for all that long.
A couple of weeks ago, Watts put his name in the transfer portal and the Longhorns were a school to watch for where he could land next. The smoke between Texas and Watts in the transfer portal has cooled off a bit in the last week. But it still looks like Texas is a top school to land the commitment of Watts out of the transfer portal at this point.
Texas football and Baylor two schools to watch for transfer CB Ryan Watts
And according to a recent report from Orangebloods (paid content), Texas remains a top two school right now in pursuit of Watts along with the Baylor Bears and head coach Dave Aranda. This report also notes that Texas still looks like the frontrunner with Watts, but Baylor has closed the gap fast.
Don’t expect the Bears to go lightly in this one. Watts is a playmaker that could help an already improving Baylor secondary as soon as next year. This is one that makes sense for both Baylor and Texas to pursue out of the transfer portal.
Texas is going to have to put its best foot forward in the pursuit of a commitment from Watts out of the transfer portal to beat out the Bears.
What Watts brings to the table out of the transfer portal for schools like Texas and Baylor pursuing him is nearly a dozen career combined tackles, no tackles for loss, no pass breakups, and one interception on nearly 150 defensive snaps in the last two seasons.
