The most high-profile former Texas football player that has his name in the NCAA Transfer Portal right now is the redshirt junior quarterback and former four-star recruit Casey Thompson. As the first Texas quarterback to put his name in the transfer portal early this offseason, Thompson made waves with this move last week. But it wasn’t like Thompson putting his name in the transfer portal this offseason was something that was completely out of the question.

Once head coach Steve Sarkisian and the Longhorns landed a commitment out of the transfer portal from the former elite five-star recruit and Ohio State Buckeyes freshman quarterback Quinn Ewers, it was figured that someone like Thompson or sophomore Hudson Card could put their name in as a result.

Thompson originally put his name in the transfer portal back on Dec. 17. There really has yet to be any concrete favorite for where his next landing spot out of the portal could be at the moment. But he could still be pretty early in the process of screening out schools that are interested in nabbing him out of the portal this offseason.

Former Texas football QB Casey Thompson noted as a potential transfer target for Arizona

A potential landing spot for Thompson that was pitched in a piece by Jason Scheer of 247Sports on Dec. 23 tabbed the Arizona Wildcats out of the PAC-12. Now, this doesn’t necessarily mean that the Wildcats have already reached out to Thompson. But it is noteworthy that some media outlets are taking notice of Thompson as a top quarterback in the portal right now.

Thompson might not want to land at a spot like Arizona where he would have such an uphill battle in front of him to win games. Arizona has won just one game over the course of the last two seasons. They’re essentially in the basement of the PAC-12 in the last few years.

And Arizona was not one of the schools that initially offered Thompson coming out of high school during the 2018 recruiting cycle.

There would have to be some real buy-in between Thompson and the Arizona coaching staff if this were to work out this offseason. But you can’t really rule anything out with where Thompson will take his talents to next.

During his three years playing for Texas, Thompson registered nearly 2,500 passing yards, 30 passing touchdowns, nine interceptions, just over 200 rushing yards, and five rushing touchdowns. At the moment, Thompson does look to be one of the most appealing quarterbacks to go after in the transfer portal.
