A big visit weekend for head coach Steve Sarkisian and the Texas football program turned into one that could be potentially program-changing when we look back on it. Texas landed a pair of important offensive line targets in the 2022 recruiting class this weekend. And the biggest news came on the night of Dec. 12 with the commitment of the former Ohio State Buckeyes freshman quarterback Quinn Ewers out of the NCAA Transfer Portal.

In the last 10 days or so, Ewers was the talk of the town for the Longhorns. There was news that came about back on Dec. 3 that Ewers put his name in the transfer portal. He immediately became the focus of the earliest point of the offseason for Longhorns fans.

This is also the biggest news to come out of the transfer portal in program history for the Longhorns. Getting Ewers to the Forty Acres is something that eluded former Texas head coach Tom Herman. In fact, eventually losing the commitment of Ewers to Ohio State is something that was one of the final straws for Herman with the Longhorns.

Ewers didn’t originally flip his commitment from Texas to Ohio State. But he did commit to the Buckeyes a couple of months after his de-commitment from Texas.

The news of the commitment of Ewers to the Longhorns originally came from Pete Thamel on Twitter on the night of Dec. 12. Ewers’ decision was anticipated to come in the days following his visit to Texas this weekend. It looked like his decision timeline could take him through Dec. 13.

But it’s not all that surprising that he had this decision drop on Dec. 12, which gives the Longhorns a few days to parlay this momentum by bringing in more big-time prospects to the 2022 class. The Early Signing Period begins on Dec. 15, and Texas now has plenty of momentum going in their favor.

Landing a pair of commitments in the form of the elite five-star Summer Creek offensive tackle Kelvin Banks and three-star Duncanville offensive tackle Cameron Williams was just the start of this momentum. The weekend had the top taken off after landing this commitment from Ewers.

Texas is now getting a serious injection of talent into their quarterback room this offseason, largely thanks to the commitment from Ewers out of the transfer portal. Texas will also be getting four-star Junipero Serra quarterback commit Maalik Murphy to campus next semester for spring ball by all accounts.

This commitment from Ewers to the Longhorns was something that Sark got over new head coach Joey McGuire and the Texas Tech Red Raiders. Ewers spent just one semester with Ohio State after reclassifying to sign with their 2021 class and enroll during fall camp.
