There’s no doubt about it, head coach Steve Sarkisian and the Texas football program had a tough time on the field during the first season under this coaching staff. Texas finished up the 2021 regular season with a record of 5-7 (3-6 Big 12) following one of the longer losing streaks in program history throughout the conference slate.

Sark and the Longhorns helped this fan base on the Forty Acres forgive some of the struggles on the field this fall, though, thanks to a boisterous start to the offseason. Texas landed a commitment from the former elite five-star recruit and freshman Ohio State Buckeyes quarterback Quinn Ewers out of the NCAA Transfer Portal earlier this month.

Texas also had a massive month on the recruiting trail, helping to bolster the 2022 class for the Early Signing Period a couple of weeks ago. Landing commitments from the likes of the elite five-star Summer Creek offensive tackle Kelvin Banks and four-star Allen OL Neto Umeozulu, among many others.

Steve Sarkisian and Texas football need to find some magic in 2022

While it’s nice to see all of the hype that Sark is building up this offseason, this team still needs to execute on the field when next season arrives. There will still be a lot of youth on this roster. Having a roster chocked full of unproven talent is still a volatile proposition for Sark and the Longhorns.

A piece from 247Sports this week summed up the season well for the Longhorns. At one point, this was a top 25 ranked team in the major preseason polls. Even heading into the Red River Rivalry game against the Oklahoma Sooners this year, the Longhorns were still ranked in the top 25 in the AP Poll.

Here’s more on what this piece from 247Sports had to say about mentioning Texas as one of the most disappointing teams of the 2021 season.

"For the first time in a half-century, Texas lost six-straight games at one point this season before finishing 5-7 with a victory over Kansas State in the finale. The low point — outside of the multi-touchdown lead squandered against Oklahoma — was a home loss to Kansas. First-year coach Steve Sarkisian watched his team spiral after a 4-1 start when the meat of the Big 12 schedule pounded the Longhorns. With five-star transfer Quinn Ewers signed, Texas expects to be a vastly different team in 2022."

Texas definitely won’t have it easy to start off the 2022 season either. They’ll have to work through some difficult competition during the non-conference slate, including the Alabama Crimson Tide and UTSA Roadrunners.

There is likely going to be a lot of hype surrounding this team again in 2022. It is just up to Sark and his staff to finally capitalize on all of the talent that will be present on the Forty Acres with Ewers and Co. coming into town this offseason.

dark. Next. Texas gets its first 2024 commit in CB Jaden Allen

Texas is still going to have a very busy offseason ahead with the transfer portal and National Signing Day still playing big roles in how this team will be shaped in 2022. Watch out for an action-packed offseason where Sark and the Longhorns need to prove a lot on the field leading up to the 2022 season.
