The 2022 Texas basketball recruiting class came back to the forefront this week by expanding its footprint with the commitment of a very talented point guard in the four-star Northfield Mount Hermon (MA) product Rowan Brumbaugh. Texas and new head coach Chris Beard landed a commitment from a former Northwestern Wildcats commit and Massachusetts product Brumbaugh to round out the 2021 calendar year on a high note.

Beard and the Longhorns gained some serious momentum on the recruiting trail to round out the calendar year thanks to essentially the flip of the commitment of Brumbaugh on Dec. 30. Some of the talent that Texas now has in the backcourt in the 2022 class is very impressive.

Texas now has commitments from two blue-chip guards in the 2022 class, along with five-star Montverde Academy small forward Dillon Mitchell. Beard and the Longhorns now have a trio that includes five-star Dallas-Kimball point guard Arterio Morris, Mitchell, and Brumbaugh, in the 2022 class.

It was an announcement on Brumbaugh’s Twitter timeline on the night of Dec. 30 that made it known that he will be bringing his talents to the Forty Acres. This helps Texas to continue its solid run on the recruiting trail of late.

There was a point in time where it looked like Texas had whiffed on their pursuit of Brumbaugh. Texas was the last program to offer Brumbaugh before he committed to Northwestern back in August. But his commitment to Northwestern only lasted a few months before de-committing earlier this week.

The pursuit that Texas had with Brumbaugh before he committed to Northwestern seemingly paid off now. This just proves for any athletic program for Texas that this type of non-stop pursuit until pen is put to paper on the recruiting trail can do wonders in the end.

Moreover, there is a lot that Brumbaugh will bring to the table for the Longhorns. Brumbaugh is a very versatile and well-rounded 6-foot-4 and 180-pound guard that gives the Longhorns 2022 class a lot of depth along with Morris in the backcourt unit.

Brumbaugh is the type of guard that has enough length and playmaking ability to create his own shot from all over the place. He’s a gifted scorer from all levels really. He can put the ball on the floor and get to the rim, be a threat as a spot-up shooter, or threaten as a catch-and-shoot weapon on the outside.

There’s also enough length and off-ball awareness that Brumbaugh brings to the table that should make him a solid defender. Brumbaugh can be the type of player for the Longhorns that averages 12-15 points per game, five assists, five rebounds, and one steal while shooting 45 percent from the field and 40 percent from beyond the arc.

He’ll be a valuable addition to the Longhorns. While the ceiling with Brumbaugh might not be as high as Morris’, he’s still going to be a big part of this backcourt unit.

After landing the commitment from Brumbaugh, Texas now has three top 100 ranked prospects in the nation in the mix. According to the 247Sports Team Composite Rankings, the 2022 Texas recruiting class now ranks at No. 13 in the nation and second in the Big 12 behind the Kansas Jayhawks.
