Texas hires Brennan Marion as WR coach/pass game coordinator
What is likely to be one of the biggest (if not the biggest) hires of the offseason for head coach Steve Sarkisian and the Texas football program on staff arrived on Dec. 30. Just ahead of the turn of the calendar year, Texas got a major upgrade to their coaching staff by all indications by adding the former Pitt Panthers wide receivers coach Brennan Marion as their next passing game coordinator and wide receivers coach.
Marion is set to replace the former Texas wide receivers coach Andre Coleman on staff. Coleman was let go by the Longhorns after two seasons as the wide receivers coach. There were some uninspiring results on the recruiting trail and in terms of player development over the last couple of years from Coleman.
It also likely didn’t help Coleman’s case that he was originally hired by former Texas head coach Tom Herman and not Sark.
All in all, this is an inspiring hire for the Longhorns potentially. Texas is adding a lot of energy and forward-thinking positional coaches on staff by hiring Marion as the wide receivers coach and Tashard Choice as the next running backs coach to replace the new Temple Owls head coach Stan Drayton.
Texas football gets the deal done to hire Brennan Marion as WR coach/PGC
Texas is definitely getting a progressive mind in Marion. And that is apparent that Texas had to recognize Marion’s thinking in this hire by giving him the title of pass-game coordinator.
Marion helped this Pitt offense reach new heights this season, especially with the breakout of quarterback Kenny Pickett and wide receiver Jordan Addison. The hope will be that Texas is able to get a similar sort of lightning in a bottle effect in the receiving corps and passing game in general by adding Marion to the staff.
What is interesting about this hire is the timing of it. From most of what we were hearing about Texas courting Marion, it sounded like he was likely going to wait to make a decision on his next move until after the Peach Bowl between Pitt and the Michigan State Spartans on Dec. 31.
Yet, Texas made the move and locked down what looked to be their top candidate to be the next wide receivers coach the entire time. This is a big move for the program and should be able to help make an immediate splash with this position group.
Texas now has a complete coaching staff back in store after letting go of Coleman and seeing Drayton get hired elsewhere. But Sark did a nice job finding some quality replacements for the two positional coaching job openings that came about early this offseason.
