3 elite 5-Star recruits Texas could land in January
Javien Toviano, CB
There is a good amount of time since I last talked about the recruitment of the five-star Arlington-Martin cornerback Javien Toviano as it relates to the Longhorns 2023 class. And that was largely because it was looking for a while like the Longhorns were starting to fall behind the Oklahoma Sooners in the race to land a commitment from Toviano.
Now that former Oklahoma head coach Lincoln Riley has left Norman, and taken a lot of his coaching staff from the Sooners with him, to a new job with the USC Trojans, it appears that Texas has a chance to make up some ground with Toviano. Texas looks to have remained among the top group of schools for Toviano for a good while now too.
That is good news for the Longhorns since it appears that Riley and all of those former Oklahoma assistants left Norman for USC a couple of months ago. He took to social media to react when that originally happened in late November.
Some of the other top schools to watch in the pursuit of Toviano as the calendar turns to 2022 are the Alabama Crimson Tide, Oregon Ducks, Notre Dame Fighting Irish, and Texas A&M Aggies.
Texas could use an early visit this offseason from Toviano to get some momentum back in their favor. It feels like this is really the opportunity for the Longhorns to seize with the door open to become Toviano’s top school after some of the coaching staff turnover in Norman.
Oklahoma definitely still looks to be a player in the recruitment of Toviano. And it helps the Sooners that they’re getting a defensive-minded head coach in the former Clemson Tigers defensive coordinator Brent Venables. But this still looks to be a recruitment that Texas can gain some momentum back in right now.
A good run in the weeks ahead, and Texas might be able to get in the spot to become Toviano’s top school.
