LSU

I wouldn’t discount the potential of Williams landing with a program that could be a major player in the transfer portal this offseason out of the SEC such as the LSU Tigers or Florida Gators. There are multiple big-time SEC programs that could be seeking help at the quarterback position out of the portal this offseason, and LSU is one that definitely sticks out.

LSU looks like a pretty appealing destination right now for any young and talented quarterback in the portal. And given the fact that LSU recruited Williams for a long time when Ed Orgeron was still head coach, there should be some familiarity here.

But most, if not all, of the staff that Williams was familiar with at LSU during his recruitment could be gone this offseason. LSU offensive coordinator Steve Ensminger was Williams’ top recruiter coming out of high school. But Ensminger was replaced on Jan. 2 by the now-former Cincinnati Bearcats offensive coordinator Mike Denbrock.

Given the success for Kelly with the Notre Dame Fighting Irish in recent years and Denbrock’s success in leading Cincinnati’s offense to a College Football Playoff appearance in 2021, this could be a connection worth watching for Williams. He wasn’t able to reach the College Football Playoff with Oklahoma in 2021, but LSU will have that goal in 2022 and 2023.

LSU has some talent on offense but there isn’t a clear answer at the quarterback position right now. That is unless Kelly is trusting enough of LSU’s five-star 2022 quarterback signee Walker Howard right out of the gates.
