Brennan Marion to Texas ranked as a top coaching hire this offseason
Just a couple of weeks ago, Texas football head coach Steve Sarkisian made the move to transition one key spot on his staff this offseason. Texas parted ways with the now-former second-year wide receivers coach Andre Coleman in late December. Coleman was subsequently replaced by the former Pitt Panthers wide receivers coach Brennan Marion.
The addition of Marion to the Longhorns coaching staff is one that should bring a lot of energy and confidence to the table.
The official title for Marion with the Longhorns coaching staff will be wide receivers coach/passing game coordinator. It looks like at least a little bit of the go-go offensive scheme that he likes to run could have an impact on the play-calling and game-planning for Sark and the Longhorns this year.
Marion should be able to bring new energy to the table for the Longhorns in terms of recruiting at the wide receiver position too. That is one of the areas where the results looked to be really uninspiring from Coleman during his time on the Forty Acres.
And there are people in the media that are catching wind of the significance that the hire of Marion as the next Texas wide receivers coach could have for this program on the field and on the recruiting trail this year.
247Sports high on Texas football adding Brennan Marion as WR coach
A piece from Will Backus of 247Sports on Jan. 6 ranked out the 15 best assistant coaching hires so far this offseason around the college football landscape. And this piece from Backus of 247Sports this week ranked Marion as one of the top 10 best assistant coaching hires around college football so far this offseason. He rang in at No. 10 on the list.
Here’s more on what this piece from 247Sports had to say on the placement of Marion’s hire.
"The past few years have been a whirlwind, though, as Marion has become one of the hottest coaching names in the nation. Each season between 2020 and now has served as a big step for the wide receivers coach, spending one year each at Hawaii, then Pittsburgh and now Texas. Panthers wide receiver Jordan Addison won the Biletnikoff Award in 2021 in his lone year under Marion. That is a huge sign of Marion’s ability and a great selling point when he hits the recruiting trail."
It looks like 247Sports is really high on the impact that Marion could have for Texas after the job he did on staff with Pitt during the 2021 campaign. He helped to take that Pitt receiving corps to a new level in 2021, including with the Biletnikoff Trophy winner Jordan Addison.
Marion is one of two very notable additions that the Longhorns had to the coaching staff so far this offseason. Texas also replaced the departed former running backs coach Stan Drayton (now the Temple Owls head coach) with the former Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets running backs coach Tashard Choice.
But the addition of Choice didn’t make this list for 247Sports. Yet, it is interesting that this ranking did include the new Georgia Tech running backs coach hire in Mike Daniels. It looks like 247 is higher on the addition of Daniels as running backs coach for the Yellow Jackets than they are Choice with the Longhorns.
Marion will be joining the Longhorns coaching staff after one year at the helm with Pitt. He was also an offensive coordinator with the William & Mary Tribe and wide receivers coach with the Hawaii Rainbow Warriors.
