In all likelihood, the target of the Longhorns 2022 class on this list that has the slimmest chance to land on the Forty Acres would seem to be the talented four-star Ponchatoula (LA) safety Jacoby Mathews. This 6-foot-2 and 195-pound safety is one of the highest-rated remaining uncommitted high school prospects for the 2022 cycle. But it doesn’t look like Texas is trending in the right direction for him at the moment.

Texas would obviously do well to land a commitment from the Louisiana product Mathews come National Signing Day next month. But it looks like the likes of the LSU Tigers, Alabama Crimson Tide, and Texas A&M Aggies. I would personally be really surprised if either the Aggies or Longhorns eventually landed a commitment from Mathews next month.

Yet, the recruitment of Mathews was always a really difficult one to pin down. And with the way that Sark and the Longhorns staff keep taking these types of recruitments with the top blue-chip targets of the 2022 class right to the finish line, you can never really rule Texas out.

Longhorns fans should still be watching what happens with Mathews right down to the finish line. With three blue-chip safety signees in the Longhorns 2022 class at the moment, it definitely won’t be a reason to press the panic button if Mathews chooses to take his talents elsewhere. Going after Turner-Gooden in the way that the Longhorns staff did in the last few months would also give the indication that they’re not overwhelmingly confident he’ll land on the Forty Acres when it’s all said and done.
