The say on what happens on the recruiting trail and in the transfer portal early in the offseason

If Patterson wants some say in the moves the Longhorns make on the recruiting trail in assembling the 2023 class, and in terms of adding defensive players out of the transfer portal, he likely would need to get hired soon. Texas already brought in one player out of the transfer portal on this side of the ball this offseason in the former Ohio State Buckeyes redshirt freshman cornerback Ryan Watts.

Knowing how much Patterson could potentially help the Longhorns on this side of the ball in terms of player development, he should likely have his voice heard for personnel decisions before too long. We’re getting a wave of transfer portal entrants right now after most teams are done with the postseason. There will be another around spring ball.

But it would be ideal for Patterson to start getting a say in what types of players and skill sets the Longhorns are going after on defense well before the beginning of spring ball.

There will be some bigger names appearing in the transfer portal that can really help the Texas defense. Namely, being able to add help in the secondary and getting a boost in the pass rush are two priorities that would be nice for Patterson to evaluate sooner rather than later.

It might also be more appealing for some of the top defensive players in the transfer portal to know that Patterson has officially joined the Texas coaching staff in some regard than if this just continues to be a slow-moving rumor. This type of conversation is certainly a relevant one when considering the addition of Patterson for the Longhorns.
