As of the morning of Jan. 13, it looks like there could be a big looming announcement concerning the Texas football program in the not-too-distant future. Second-year Texas head coach Steve Sarkisian could soon have the newest addition to his staff announced at some point even during the upcoming weekend.

The newest potential addition that could soon be coming to the Longhorns coaching staff is the former longtime TCU Horned Frogs head coach Gary Patterson. There were multiple reports in the last few weeks mentioning a lag in the discussions between Texas and Patterson, followed by a meeting between the parties involved last week.

Knowing that Patterson met with the Longhorns coaching staff last week to potentially come on board soon, it doesn’t feel like an announcement is all that far out. And a report from Horns247 on the morning of Jan. 13 (paid content) notes that an announcement officially coming from Texas regarding the hiring of Patterson to the staff in some major defensive role shouldn’t be too far out.

Gary Patterson joining the Texas football staff could soon be announced

There are multiple indicators showing that Texas should be in a position to officially announce the hiring of Patterson to the defensive staff before too long. The first is the fact that there was a “special assistant to the head coach” position listed with an assumed start date around Jan. 16. That likely wouldn’t have popped up in the last week or so if not for Patterson joining this staff.

Moreover, it looks like Texas is getting the former TCU standout and two-time All-Big 12 junior edge rusher/defensive end Ochaun Mathis out of the NCAA Transfer Portal this offseason. The idea is that Mathis is following Patterson from TCU to Texas.

The timeline could all be coming together now for a potential announcement to come from the university at some point during the weekend or very early next week. This is an exciting time for Texas with plenty of change happening to the roster and the coaching staff. The hope is that this all will lead up to some dramatic improvement in the results on the field next fall.

If the hiring of Patterson is announced for the Longhorns this coming weekend, it would be the third significant addition to the coaching staff early on this offseason. The other two came with the new wide receivers coach/passing game coordinator Brennan Marion and running backs coach Tashard Choice.
