There was a very notable miss for the Longhorns in the transfer portal on the afternoon of Jan. 16 too. While it was great to hear the news of Texas landing a commitment from Billingsley to fill a need at tight end, there was another position of need that the staff didn’t fill this weekend. Texas missed out on the former Alabama sophomore edge rusher and five-star recruit Drew Sanders on Jan. 16.

Sanders took to social media this weekend to announce that he would pass up top schools such as Texas and the Oklahoma Sooners to commit to the Arkansas Razorbacks and head coach Sam Pittman.

Now, Texas should be working even harder to ensure that they can lock down on a commitment from the former TCU two-time All-Big 12 edge rusher/defensive end and senior Ochaun Mathis. Texas looked to be the first program that really found traction with Mathis once he put his name into the portal last week.

The leading indicators look to be very positive for Texas in relation to landing a commitment out of the portal from Mathis. A combination of an obvious need at the position with the potential addition to the staff of the former longtime Horned Frogs head coach Gary Patterson means that there are plenty of reasons for Mathis to come to the Forty Acres.

The thing with pursuing Mathis is, knowing that he wants to finish up some of his college credits still in Fort Worth, it could be a few months before Texas could officially get a commitment out of him.
